I was doing yoga and I loved it.
It was close to my house, they had times I liked and I loved the workouts.
I was a happy client.
But my life got busy.
I started writing more books, created a podcast, the number of gym owners in my Mastermind doubled. I was frequently traveling to speak at seminars so I stopped doing Yoga.
Reason #1: people leave your gym: Life got in the way.
We went to this restaurant we really loved.
We always ordered the crab tacos, even if it wasn’t on the menu.
They took care of us.
One night a new waitress was working and we asked for our normal order of crab tacos.
She said, it’s not on the menu. We went on to tell the new girl that we were regulars. No dice, she was rude too.
We eventually got them but not without a bad feeling as we left. It took us a very long time to go back. They lost a lot of business from us and a lot of referrals.
Reason #2: There was an unsatisfying experience, many times it’s so small the owner never even knows about. In the case of my restaurant example, he didn’t.
The final reason people leave is their situation changed and they cannot use your gym anymore. The kid graduates, the family moves too far away, she gets a full-time job, she has a baby, etc.
It’s really hard to do anything about reason #3, although it’s possible they can still be good referral sources for you.
So, what do you do…
The people in the first group are waiting for you to call them to get them back in.
The people in the second group are waiting for you to call them and ask if everything was ok and potentially offer an apology.
These are some of the most qualified people in your world.
At GFP last year, 15% of the new clients we got were clients that used to be members.
That’s a number big enough to build a system around to attract them back ASAP.
If only the Yoga place would just call me, I’d go back.

P.S. If you live in the Denver area, I am speaking tomorrow at the Mindbody Bold Conference. If you’re in the area, I’d love to see you there.
