Years back, we ran a referral contest. We said for the month of November, the person that referred us the most clients would get an i-Pad.
The problem was there was no real incentive for them to refer. They either had an i-Pad or could easily buy one and didn’t want to be bothered with giving a referral for it.
We did not try this idea again for many years and I am kicking myself for it.
I saw a company I work with doing a referral contest and was giving away a Tesla, now that’s a prize!
The secret is a bigger prize and this inspired me to run it again.
The prize must be something worth talking about
When we changed our prize to something huge, we got tons of referrals for our contest.
Before you go ahead and spend 50K on a Tesla, and I do NOT recommend you do that, you need to know one very important number.
That number is the number that should tell you how big of a prize you can actually give away.
It’s one of the most important numbers in marketing. I have to guess that based on the hundreds of gym owners I talk to, about 8 out of 10 gyms do NOT.
So, I have good news and bad news.
