A 70 Million Dollar Deli

In November, I’m taking my mastermind group to Ann Arbor Michigan to have our meeting at Zingerman’s Deli.   
You may be thinking why I would be bringing them to a deli in Michigan. 

Well, this Deli started like your business and mine, a small start-up.  
It has grown to a 70-Million-dollar business and they’ve written a ton of great books on business. 

The founder is an amazing guy named Ari Weinzweig. He’s as out there as it comes but there is so much to learn from him.  

I reached out to Ari a few years back, telling him how awesome him and his books are. 

After many exchanges and a few trips to Ann Arbor myself, we’ve become friends.   

He actually wrote about me in a chapter of one of his books.   

The lesson today is you need to be a student of business.   
You need to look at what your local restaurants, law firms, dentist offices, and hair salons are doing.  
Go through the buying experience not just as a customer but a curious entrepreneur.  Look to learn from their good stuff and even more from the bad stuff.    
Hell, I was getting my haircut and my barber told me that he gets all the mailing addresses of new residents in the local towns for $27/month!  
After removing the service delivery part, the business is mostly the same.   
The barber had been in business for over 30 years, he’s probably doing something right.

From now, on every buying experience is a learning experience.   
When you visit your chiropractor, check out their customer service.  
When you get your haircut, ask them their most successful way they bring in new clients. 
Franchises are definitely worth learning from too. They have systems down to a T, how simple is asking someone if they want black or pinto beans?  

If you’re going to be a better gym owner, you need to be curious.  
Extreme curiosity will make you a better business person and in turn you will be more successful.   
While, studying other businesses is something you should be doing, learning from people that have had long term success in the fitness industry is a good idea too.
