On Wednesday, I talked about my struggle with lack of Focus.
Today, I want to unpack another challenge I had in business.
I was bad at marketing.
I grew my business quickly through very high labor.
I was out and about all the time running free clinics, showing up and watching the kids I trained play games, and posting flyers in the local restaurants.
I had success but it took a massive toll on me and my health.
There was no possible way I could have kept up the pace of all the work I was doing.
Everything depended on me and it was a big investment of my time.
Here was the mistake I made:
I did not have a clear target market.
I was using the mirror test to help guide me to get new clients.
If they breathed on the mirror and it fogged up, they were my clients.
I would do things to get 6-year-olds, 10-year-olds, high school kids, college kids, post rehab clients, fat loss clients, teachers, coaches, football teams, lacrosse teams, hockey teams, softball teams, I could go on and on.
When all these people are your clients it’s impossible to have a marketing plan that works.
All the populations above need a different marketing message and there’s no way I had the bandwidth or knowledge to even do this.
I was trying to get everyone because I was for no one.
If you want a basic principle in marketing, start with this:
- Have a clearly defined target market
- Be sure that market has the ability to support your business goals
- Learn everything you can about that market
- Do ALL of your marketing toward that market
#2 is key.
I don’t care how passionate you are about a target market, if it does not have the potential to help you grow a great business, you do that market no help because you won’t be around long to serve them.
Sports performance guys listen up!
I could go on and on about how this is a bad market to choose as your primary target market but I don’t have 12 hours.
If I did not change this, I would have been in massive trouble.
I luckily saw the writing on wall before some other famous gurus in this market did.
That change helped my business thrive while some of the gurus that were 10x as famous as me, closed their doors.
I’ll be unpacking all of this in much more detail here:
