Hiring Mistake

Since July I’ve hired the following people for my 4 companies:

  • A General Manager to run my gym
  • A Sports Performance Director to run my new sports performance business
  • A Personal Trainer for my gym
  • A New Operations Director for my coaching business
  • A Client Success Manager for the marketing agency
  • A Tech Guru for the marketing agency
  • A Marketing Manager for my gym

Thus far, I’m very happy with everyone.

There was one thing I changed in our job ad that, I believe, helped attract some high-quality people.

Most job ads have ZERO personality.

They simply list all the stuff they need to do and give them a range of how much one they’ll make.

It’s very transactional and they all blend together…meaning there’s nothing that separates one job from the next.

I was going through some job posts of local competitors…

They all were awful.

Then I read mine, and they honestly weren’t much better.

So, I made a shift that I will continue with for the foreseeable future.

I made the job post a letter from me, instead of just telling them about the job.

The letter told them what we did, why we do it, what type of person were looking for to join our movement and what they needed to be considered for the job.

Everyone that made it through to an interview with me (we have a rigorous process to go through before I speak to anyone) was very excited about the role.

Steve Jobs has a line, he wants to find people that are going to fall in love with Apple.

This is the foundation for building a great team.

Finding the right people that love your company.

Most of the people above took pay cuts to work for us.

The mission trumped the money.

The culture crushed the benefits.

The job ad communicated that this job would not be a J.O.B and they wouldn’t be another “worker.”

They would be joining something special and different.

Something they could be proud of.

Something they would get excited to show up to each day.

Many of you are doing this, but not showing it at step one of the interview process.

Take a look at your job ad, and see if this is a shift you’d like to make.

If you’re at the level where you’re focusing on building a team right now, consider THIS!
