Voted the #1 Book for Trainers to Read

There was a question posted in the SPF Mastermind Facebook group recently about what books they should have their trainers read.

Talk about an all-out assault.

A ton of the members in the group chimed in.

As I was reading all the answers, I noticed a pattern.

You would think that a question like this would be filled with training books.

It wasn’t.

The comments got bombarded by books about personal development and habit change.

When I was meeting with the great Mike Boyle back in 2005 the first thing, he told me to do was to read How to Win Friends and Influence People.

He went on to say it was the greatest book ever written.

Well, that same book came up a ton of times in this thread, making it the undisputed champion of books for trainers to read.

The part of the book that is most effective is when they teach about asking questions and talking about other people.

I don’t think there is a better skill for a trainer, or a person for that matter, than to take the focus off themselves and put it on others.

I used to work with a girl back in San Diego who would literally train her clients while she laid on the floor. While on the floor, she would cry the blues to her clients about everything under the sun (including how loud I was as a personal trainer LOL, she hated me).

This is the opposite of a great trainer because the focus was all about her and had nothing to do with the client.

As a gym owner, your job is to put these kinds of resources in the hands of your trainers and then go over them regularly.

After owning a gym for 13 years I’ve had many trainers, the most successful ones were the best with people.

So, in terms of hiring trainers, focus on these qualities:

  • They’re in the business to help people, not become instafamous.
  • They don’t spend a ton of time talking about themselves.
  • They give off positive energy and don’t gossip.
  • They are open to learning and growing.

You can learn a lot from the book recommendations of smart people.
