Why I Almost Jumped Out of a Moving Car

Our first daughter’s first birthday was a big deal.
We had a party and invited a ton of people, it was a great time.
Then, Vanessa, my perfect wife, brought out the cake.
The cake was magnificent, it looked like art. I almost felt bad about cutting into it.
Everyone was commenting about how nice the cake was.
While we were cleaning up I told Vanessa how the party was great and the cake was amazing.
She smiled.
I asked her where she got the cake.
She faintly mentioned some obscure bakery that was an hour away from us I had never heard of.
I kept on cleaning.
On the car ride home I could not stop thinking about that cake.
I turned to Vanessa and asked her how much the cake was.
She turned beat red and said, “Well, I’m not totally sure, I’ll have to check the receipt”.
I asked her again, with a little more gusto.
“How much was that [Insert curse word] cake? (Catching myself) Sweety?”
I knew it was going to be a whopper.
It turns out the cake was $379!!
I almost jumped out of the moving car.
To me, a $4 box of Betty Crocker Cake mix and a $2 pack of frosting would have been perfect.
But for my wife, this was our first daughter’s first birthday, an event that would never happen again.
The cake, while crazy to me made perfect sense to her because of the significance of the event.
Everyone has their thing they spend money on.
I won’t bat an eye at a $200 massage because of how much I value my health and managing my stress.
Some people spend $2,000 a year at Starbucks; that is ludicrous.
Some pay $500 per hour to get a private tour guide at Disney.
Because the cake was crazy to me does not mean it didn’t make perfect sense to my wonderful wife.
How much you charge for a gym membership, you’re value judgement does not matter.
The ONLY thing that matters is the value judgement of your members.
Prices being too low cripples gyms everyday.
Your pricing structure is one of the most important things to focus on.
It’s the key to either being a profitable gym or treading water for years.
There is not much out there on building a profitable pricing structure for gym owners.
