I’ve spent quite a bit of time with the founder of Zingerman’s Deli, Ari Weinzweig.
Ari now runs an 80-million-dollar food and mail order business but…
He started just like you and me…
…One small corner deli, with he and his business partner making the sandwiches.
Since opening that deli they have opened 3 restaurants, a bakery, a coffee company, a candy company, a mail order business and a business consulting company.
All together these businesses have a combined revenue of $80,000,000.
I asked Ari in one of our many conversations why he never opened up a ton more of them all around the country.
The deli was what made them famous and was highly successful and profitable.
The business mind thinks that one should take one really good concept and just multiply it.
Which is what I think most gym owners think they should do.
Ari’s Answer:
“Opening up a ton of delis just wasn’t that interesting to me”
He went to talk about the small town feel of all of their businesses…and how multiplication of one business would bring a level of regulation that he thinks takes the innovation and creativity out of business.
So instead, he takes the team members that start in his company and creates new businesses…with them taking on a piece as a managing partner…
…But uses the exact guiding business principles from the Deli.
The businesses are different but the values are the same:
Great Food, Great Service, Great Finance.
All the of their businesses follow this exact model.
You may think that the only way to grow is to open a second gym…that dream most likely has been delayed by what’s going on in the world.
But do you even want to open another gym?
Or are you doing it because that’s just what you think you should be doing.
The beauty in all of this is that you can do whatever you want.
You can do what is “interesting” to you.
Take what I’ve done:
· I opened a gym
· Started a media company
· Co-founded a digital marketing company
I now have 3 streams of income and have what I think are 3 really cool businesses I love…all founded on the same core values that I started my gym with.
I’ll be honest and say I thought about opening a second gym for a while but it just wasn’t the direction I wanted.
I have several Mastermind members that have opened multiple locations and done great.
Not sure what you want?
Totally normal.
That’s why I do therapy sessions…I mean…. business coaching sessions J…with gym owners all the time.
I even have it down to a formula of 3-5 questions I ask that tends to bring a ton of clarity.
