About a year ago I fired the guy that was running my gym.
He was a nice guy, but just didn’t get the job done.
I went for a while without replacing him because it was COVID, but with all the other businesses still in growth mode…I needed to bring someone in.
I wanted someone to run the gym, to be my CEO and allow me to focus on my other ventures.
In order to do that, I was looking for someone that could do two things.
- Lead
- Sell
I had time to teach him how to lead.
I had no time to teach him how to sell.
He came in and blew the doors off.
This guy sold more in his first month than the previous guy did in close to a year.
I didn’t teach him how to sell.
He already knew.
As your business advances, many times we get in this mindset of turning our trainers into sales people, marketers and General Managers.
Sometimes it works.
Most of the time it doesn’t.
I’m all for hire for character to train for skill…when you hire personal trainers…
But, I do not give this same advice when bringing in team members that hold major functions of the business like sales, marketing, operations and finance.
Instead you should hire for character and hire for skill.
Can they do the job you need them to do?
Are they a core value fit?
Then, it’s a go.
But here’s the problem…
Most gym owners have no idea what the job should be themselves.
This is why so many hires in these positions fail.
The owner isn’t even sure what to tell them to do to get the success the business needs.
I’ve been here before.
The secret to this is a well thought out KRA.
KRA stands for key results area, and it’s the secret sauce to new hires knowing what the heck to do when they get started.
