how to love your gym again

I found myself sitting in my car, not wanting to unlock the front door of my gym.

I had dedicated my life to the personal training business.

I spent years looking at my gym in action…in complete bliss that I got to earn a living doing something I loved so much.

I was happy, proud and free.

But I had never been tested.

The first few years into my business I got by on sheer desire, passion and hard work.

As time went by and the business grew this strategy no longer worked.

There were things that started to happen that were just going over my head.

I found myself dealing with stuff that I was not prepared to handle.

Managing employees, dealing with cash flow fluctuations, a lawsuit and something I never imagined…client attrition.

I sat in my car and for the first time in my career I questioned whether I made the right decision.

Doubt crept in and I was on the verge of burnout.

The first sign of a real struggle I was ready to quit.

For many, Covid-19 is their first real struggle and it’s a big one.

This was many years ago and even in the midst of a pandemic I now find myself in a much better position.

My gym is still going strong and has allowed me the time to create 2 others businesses…which is where I spend most of my time these days.

I write this to you today because I think there are many gym owners sitting in their car and not wanting to go in.

This pandemic has stripped the dream of many gym owners and it will take many more.

But I will tell you this.

When my business was at the worst, so was my mindset.

You have no control over Covid-19, the economy or how long this will last.

The only thing you have control over is how to think about what is going on right now.

This will be the thing that makes or breaks many gym owner careers.

I’m not going to be one of those positive thinking memes and tell you that Covid-19 is a good thing.

It sucks.

But is this just your first big test?

Is this the test to see if this is really what you should be doing?

If not, that’s completely fine and no one would look at you negatively if you didn’t make it.

But honestly, who gives a shit what they would think anyway…that’s none of your business.

The real thing you need to decide is…are you in or out?

Sitting in your car not wanting to unlock the door is no way to live.

If you’re in, see it through and go down swinging.

Or better yet, find a way to win…I’m pretty sure you can.

There’s only one person that can make it happen.

It all starts with your 100% commitment.

That commitment will give you the courage to keep going.

Courage is not what you think.

Courage does NOT feel good.

Courage is continuing even if you’re scared.

If you’re going to breakthrough your current mindset about if you should continue, you need to have courage.

Having courage will keep you going but you’ll need to make sure to get the help you need right now.

Running a business through a pandemic is not something you should be doing by yourself.

Reach out to other business owners, read, listen to podcasts, do everything you can to improve your own personal capability to lead your business through this challenging time.

Only after this will the confidence come to pull yourself out of the car, swing open that door and own the day.

And that’s all you need to do right now.

Win one day at a time.
