Vanessa (my wife), and I got an email from our daughter’s teacher yesterday.
The email was very short and urgent, she wanted to speak with us today…about our daughter.
Vanessa went into panic mode, I was somewhat concerned but kind of knew what it was going to be about.
The teacher went on to tell us that she was having trouble focusing.
She has lots of great ideas but sometimes we find her on the side…reading a book that has nothing to do with what we’re doing in school…
Other times she just stares into space and is in another world…
There’s even times where she gets super frustrated and upset with her math problems.
A big smile went on my face.
Sounds just like her father…
I’ve struggled with focus my entire life.
It’s been a curse for me.
But, it’s also been the biggest blessing.
It’s been a blessing because it’s forced me to have to work harder.
It’s forced me to create strategies…and to spend time on things that others never even thought about.
Meditation for me is like water.
For others, it’s a waste of time.
Having a system to manage myself and stay focused is essential…everything comes off the rails if I don’t follow it.
Cold Showers are not painful…they are necessary.
My issues with focus have forced me to do these things.
If I didn’t, life would be very hard.
There’s a great book you should read called David and Goliath by Malcolm Gladwell.
It talks about how perceived weaknesses can actually become strengths.
My focus issue has made me a better and more disciplined person.
It’s also armed me to be ability to help my daughter navigate the challenges she will face over the next few years in school.
Whatever you got…it’s been given to you.
But, always know you have the power to make progress…no matter what.
My father cannot use his right arm at all…he’s gotten very good at using his left.
People that are blind end up having very good hearing.
Athletes that lack strength and speed and compete at high levels through using better technique than their opponent.
Whatever you lack…intelligence, personality, focus…
It’s not a death sentence.
You can improve…and if you cannot improve the thing you struggle with…you can always get better in other areas to make up for it.
The great Dan Sullivan says: Progress NOT Perfection.
He’s right.
The Great Tony Robbins says: Progress = Happiness.
He’s right too.
Onward,
Vince Gabriele
