I sat down with a gym owner recently who thought they had a marketing problem.
After looking at the numbers (they never lie), there was no issue with marketing. His lead flow was fine.
The leak was the conversion from the lead to consultation. It was eye opening to him.
Many gyms don’t know this but they have something called a sales prevention department.
It’s a specific department where you deflect or drop the ball on people that want to give you money.
It’s a killer to a business.
You work too hard to have this kind of department in your business and the unfortunate thing is, you may not even know it!
This is having people that are supposed to be your first point of contact through answering the phone, an email or greeting someone when they walk in and them not doing their job effectively (It’s costing you money!).
It’s one of the most critical jobs in the business and if not done well it will actually prevent people from coming to your gym.
The problem is, many gym owners get an admin and throw them the most important job in the gym (fielding new potential business).
No training, no system, no feedback.
Your marketing plan is useless when you have a sales prevention department.
If you’re spending money on marketing and not focusing on what happens after they contact you, you are losing serious money.
Here are some things I see among gyms:
- Not having happy smiling people answer your phone or greet people when they walk in.
- Not collecting contact info when someone stops in.
- Not having a pre-thought-out system for following up with leads (most don’t buy the first time).
- Not keeping track of how many leads you convert.
- Not role playing and training the people that hold this position.
