This Week I am Taking Some Time to Sharpen My Sword

I have an appointment in NYC today to visit a new Doctor that’s come highly recommended to me by someone I trust. 


She is a functional medicine doctor that works from a holistic point of view and manages your health through lab testing, food, supplements, hormones, etc. 


I have been working with a doctor like this for several years and feel this is how medicine should be done.  


Typical medicine is you wait for something really bad to happen than take several different medications to treat the symptoms.  


The symptoms are rarely the issue.  


Functional Medicine finds out what is causing the symptoms and then treats that specific problem.  


It finds out WHY the symptom is there.  


It’s very smart to have this same mindset with your business.  


What you see as the problem is rarely the actual problem.  


Let’s say you have a trainer that is underperforming. 


You immediately start thinking you made a bad hire, they are lazy and you probably need to fire them.  


If you take a step back and think about why this could be happening you may think of a few other things. 


Maybe they are having a tough time at home. 


Maybe they are going through a health scare that they have not told you about. 


Maybe they feel like they are not appreciated. 


Maybe they are being asked to work more hours than they can handle. 


In this case, the underperforming trainer is the symptom but the cause is bad leadership. 


If you keep trying to fix the trainer and do not address the bigger issue being poor leadership, the problem won’t go away.  


If you end up firing this person, you’ll eventually have an issue with the next. 


When problems come up start asking yourself what could be causing this problem. 


Than focus on the cause and not the symptom.
